Basketball roundup: Maine South girls open conference play with win; Grayslake North’s Mitrovic reaches 1,000 points

Welcome to Tuesday night wrap up. Every Tuesday Dick Quagliano will round up the highlights from Cook and Lake County basketball action.

Maine South 57, Glenbrook North 37: Maine South (4-1, 1-0) picked up a huge win in its CSL South opener by knocking off previously unbeaten Glenbrook North (4-1, 0-1).

Maine South was led by Phoebe O’Shea, who had 14 points thanks to a quartet of three-pointers. Hayden Fahy added 13 points and Gianna LaVecchia 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists while Addie Kopf chipped in 8 points.

Libertyville 69, Lake Forest 35: Libertyville (4-1, 1-0) got a huge night from Lily Fisher, who tallied 27 points. Charlotte Harrison added 15 while Jenna Stowe had 11.

Vernon Hills 68, Maine East 25: Vernon Hills (5-1, 2-0) bolted to a 25-6 lead and the Cougars ran away with it from there, dropping Maine East to 2-3, 0-1. Vernon Hills had four players in double figures with Emma Jocson’s 12 points, Keira Thomas’ 11 points and Ella Nowacki and Eve Engler with 10 points each.

Maine West 43, Niles West 29: Maine West opened up a 15-4 lead after one quarter and the Warriors (5-0, 1-0) cruised from there to remain unbeaten. Alyssa Philips and Ava Roback each had 14 points while Kaitlyn Nutley had 8 points and 6 assists.

Mundelein 46, Waukegan 45: Gabby MacApinlac had a game-winning layup as Mundelein (6-0, 1-0) remained unbeaten. Casey Vyverman led the Mustangs with 18 points, Anayha Castro had 13 points and MacApinlac and Grace Dunigan each had 6 points.

Round Lake 59, Wheeling 23: Round Lake (1-2) got big performances from Kaleigh Skowronski who led the way with 15 points, Brianna Arteaga who had 13 points, and Emma Franks had 12. Justyce Bills came off the bench and scored 7 points. Wheeling (0-5) was led by Nicole Sterkowiec and Laila Crump, who each had 6 points.

Grayslake Central 47, Zion-Benton 10: Grayslake Central (2-3) scored the first 30 points to roll. Ava Henne and Peyton Hoffmann each scored 7 points to lead the Rams while Lucy Otoo had 6 points. Hoffmann also led the team with 7 rebounds.

Lake Park 49, Conant 28: Conant (0-5) came up a bit short. The Cougars were led by sophomores Inaaya Abdul, who had 10 points, and Kate Clark, who had 7 points.

Lake Zurich 52, Warren 24: The Bears scored the first 14 points as Leah Gilbertson scored 10 of them as Lake Zurich (3-2, 1-0) rolled. Gilbertson finished with 14 points.

Boys

Deerfield 63, Vernon Hills 40: Veron Hills (4-1) dropped its first game as Deerfield (6-0) pulled away from a 34-32 third quarter lead. Brady Larsen led Vernon Hills with 19 points while Daniel Odhiambo added 12 points. Deerfield was paced by Jacob Pollack, who had 26 points, and Evan Nagler’s 22 points.

Lake Zurich 41, Prospect 36: Lake Zurich (3-2) knocked Prospect from the ranks of the unbeaten. Lake Zurich was led by Adrian Riep, who had 18 points, while Kain Kretschmar had 7 points. Prospect (3-1) was led by Quinn Zinzer, who had 12 points, Colin Tucker 9 points and Danny Simon 7 points and 10 rebounds.

Antioch 57, Zion-Benton: 55: Antioch (1-4) rallied to win its first game of the season. Mark Render led the Sequoits with 27 points including a pair of free throws to seal it. Miles Marabella had 14 points, Logan Lennon 6 points and Cooper Marabella 4 points.

Maine East 67, Elgin 38: Maine East (4-0) continued its hot start by rolling over the Maroons (0-3). Jayden Dozie led the Demons with 16 points, Brandon Schreiber chipped in 15 points while Kaiden Wade added 9 points.

Lakes 58, Fenton 45: Lakes (2-2) pulled away in the fourth quarter behind Ben Newcomb, who had 22 points, Carter Martin 14 points and Dylan McCann and Dorian Pullen, who each scored 10 points.

Woodstock 74, Grant 64: Grant (1-2) fell on the road to Woodstock (4-0). Charles Schlicht led Grant with 19 points, Damarrion Smith had 18 points and DJ Stitts added 10 points.

Buffalo Grove 66, Grayslake Central 51: Alex Sirbu came up big for the Bison. The 6-foot-8 junior scored 22 points and had 15 rebounds and 5 block shots to lead the way. Edwin Karnauchovas finished with 12 points while Jackson Oldenburg added 11 points for Buffalo Grove (3-1). Alex Granville led Grayslake Central (2-3) with 15 points while Carson Woods had 12 points and Andy Monzanga 8 points.

Grayslake North 66, Westlake Christian 28: Grayslake Central (3-1) rolled as Uros Mitrovic had 11 points to pass the 1,000-point mark. Will Foley led the Knights with 17 points, Jared Van Donselaar added 7 points, Eddie Johnson 6 points, and Alan Jalloh and Angelo O’Connor each had 5 points.
