National Weather Service: Metropolitan area in line for 6-10 inches of snow

A winter storm warning continues throughout metropolitan Chicago through 6 a.m. Sunday, and through midnight tonight for areas south and east of Interstate I-55, according to the National Weather Service in Romeoville.

As of noon Saturday, snow accumulation was between 2 and 5 inches depending on the area, said Lee Carlaw, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The storm is expected to produce 6 to 10 inches of snow accumulation “over the broad region,” Carlaw said. Drivers may anticipate snow-covered roads and increased travel times.

Below-normal temperatures will continue with temperatures Sunday ranging from the 20s to near 30 degrees. Monday is expected to see highs in the 20s, with overnight low temperatures in the teens to low 20s, Carlaw said.

He said there also is a chance of light snow accumulation Monday afternoon into the evening.

“The main message here is the worst conditions of the storm are starting now through the afternoon and early evening hours,” Carlaw said. “And the snow will be winding down late this evening.”
