U-46 radio station celebrates 75 years with open house

Elgin Area School District U-46 is hosting an open house on Tuesday, Dec. 9, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of U-46’s radio station WEPS 88.9 FM.

It is one of the oldest continuously-operating school district radio stations in the United States.

All members of the public are invited to stop by the open house between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The radio station is located inside the district’s Dream Academy, 46 S. Gifford St., Elgin. Visitors should enter through Door 15 and be prepared to show a state-issued identification.

Members of U-46’s Communications & Community Relations Team will be available to answer questions, give tours of the radio station, and record visitors reading the call sign identification for the station.

As it marks a historic milestone, WEPS is launching a revitalized lineup for programming, including a podcast, student-created content, and an evening storytime for young children. The lineup schedule can be found at u-46.org/weps.
