Naperville gets larger, modernized DMV to accommodate city’s growth

Naperville-area drivers can kick the tires on a new DMV that offers more space and streamlined services.

The updated, appointment-only facility on West Diehl Road replaces an office on 75th Street that opened in 1994.

“The new Naperville DMV embodies our commitment to efficient, customer-friendly public service that our state’s third-largest city deserves,” Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said. “It’s a brand-new, gorgeous, functional, larger location that will not make you feel like you’re in a DMV.”

The venue, which opened on Friday, offers more than 3,000 square feet of space and additional parking. It also features cross-trained employees so visitors don’t have to go to separate counters for vehicle and driver’s services.

Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Drivers can apply for and renew licenses, submit REAL ID applications, take road tests, and obtain sticker renewals, title work and more.

Giannoulias has been gradually modernizing DMVs across the state, including locations in Aurora and Lombard.

Naperville has one of the busiest DMVs in Illinois, he said. The city grew by 55,000 people over the lifetime of the Diehl Road center, which closed Thursday.

The secretary of state’s office has also added staff to the location at 1771 W. Diehl Road, Unit 110.

“Naperville has been exploding in growth, which is the reason we wanted a larger facility,” Giannoulias said.

DMVs across the U.S. have been bustling for months with the May 2025 deadline to obtain REAL ID for domestic air travel.

“REAL ID is still keeping us busy but it’s definitely fallen off,” Giannoulias said.

Now is a good time to apply with younger drivers away at college and snowbirds in warmer climes, he advised.
