Multiple crashes on I-90 send two to hospital with serious injuries

Two people suffered serious injuries following multiple crashes Thursday evening on Interstate 90 near Huntley.

The first crash was reported just before 5:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-90 near the Route 47 exit and involved two vehicles. One driver was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The other driver refused transport.

Minutes later, a second crash was reported about a mile away near at the Route 47 off-ramp. Witnesses told police they saw a passenger vehicle collided with a semitrailer truck. The male driver of the passenger vehicle was trapped inside his vehicle, but there was not semitrailer truck in the area, authorities said.

Huntley Fire Protection District firefighters worked for 35 minutes to extricate the driver and a medical helicopter was requested, but couldn’t be dispatched because of weather. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, but his current condition is unknown.

Both crashes remain under investigation by the Illinois State Police

Three outside lanes of I-90 and the route 47 off-ramp were closed for nearly five hours due to the crashes, state police officials said.
