Naperville house fire caused by ‘improper disposal’ of coals

An overnight fire has displaced two adults and two children from their Naperville home, authorities said Monday.

The city’s dispatch center received a call at about 1:09 a.m. reporting a fire on the back deck of the home in the 700 block of Kaiser Court. The caller confirmed that everyone had safely evacuated and that one of the homeowners was trying to extinguish the fire with a garden hose.

Crews arrived at 1:16 a.m. and found a fire on the back deck extending into the attic, officials said in a news release. The fire was brought under control and declared extinguished at 1:35 a.m.

There were no reported injuries to residents, pets, or firefighters. However, the city’s Transportation, Engineering, and Development team has declared the structure uninhabitable.

The fire was caused by the “improper disposal of charcoal coals,” according to the release. The cost of the damage is estimated at more than $50,000.
