Carpentersville police officer facing DUI charge after crash

A Carpentersville police officer has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after a crash early Thursday morning.

Jesus Ignacio Jr., 27, of the 600 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Carpentersville, is also charged with leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to the report, a Toyota RAV4 was “hanging off” the edge of a driveway, with the rear of the car in the street, around 3 a.m. in the 100 block of Lake Shore Drive. Ignacio was behind the wheel.

The deputy reported that Ignacio provided differing explanations as to why he was stopped there. The deputy then saw damage to the right front bumper and fluid leaking from the vehicle.

When asked for his driver’s license, Ignacio first provided a government-services ID and his Carpentersville police ID, according to the report.

The deputy reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol and said that Ignacio had bloodshot and glassy eyes. Ignacio refused to take a breath-alcohol test or perform field sobriety tests, according to the report.

Carpentersville police determined that the RAV4 had hit a gate at Acme Industrial on Maple Avenue.

Ignacio was hired by Carpentersville in April and obtained his state certification in August, according to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Carpentersville village records indicate he graduated from the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy Aug. 22.

He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave, according to Deputy Chief Kevin Stankowitz.
