Suspect arrested after shooting and standoff at Wheeling hotel

One person was wounded Thursday in a shooting at a Wheeling hotel that led to a standoff with police, authorities said.

Police descended on the MainStay Suites Northbrook Wheeling, 8000 Capitol Drive, about 11:30 a.m. after receiving a call about a man with a gun.

Officers found a man in the lobby with a gunshot wound, police said in a news release. He was taken to Endeavor Health Glenbrook Hospital and is expected to survive.

Officers from Wheeling and other communities secured the hotel and, after a standoff that lasted until after 2 p.m., arrested a suspect. No one else was injured.

A handgun was recovered.

The suspect, also an adult, remained in custody Thursday night as police investigated the shooting, Deputy Chief Joseph Kopecky said. No charges had been filed.
