Cubs reach deal to bring back pitcher Colin Rea in 2026
The Cubs announced a new deal for pitcher Colin Rea on Thursday, assuring the right-hander will return in 2026.
There was a team option worth $6 million, which would have been a no-brainer to exercise. Instead, the Cubs worked out a new deal that will guarantee Rea $6.5 million. It includes a $5.5 million contract for 2026, then a team option for 2027 with a $1 million buyout, according to mlb.com.
Rea, 35, was one of the most reliable Cubs pitchers last season. He started the year in a long relief role but quickly moved into the starting rotation and stayed there, finishing with a career-best 3.95 ERA in 27 starts. Rea was second on the team, behind Matthew Boyd, in innings pitched with 159⅓.
The Cubs declined an option for first baseman Justin Turner, making him a free agent. Other Cubs who officially became free agents this week include Kyle Tucker, Shota Imanaga, Brad Keller, Willi Castro, Carlos Santana, Aaron Civale, Drew Pomeranz, Caleb Thielbar, Taylor Rogers and Ryan Brasier. There are now just 27 players on the team’s 40-man roster.
The Cubs tendered qualifying offers worth $22 million to both Tucker and Imanaga on Thursday. If either free agent signs with another team, the Cubs would receive draft compensation.
Those players could also choose to stick with the Cubs on the one-year, $22-million deal, though that path is uncommon. The Cubs are expected to be one of several contenders for Tucker in free agency, and it’s also possible they could work out a new deal for Imanaga.
Meanwhile, two Cubs minor-league pitchers found new homes this week. Keegan Thompson signed with Cincinnati and Nate Pearson joined Houston.
