Geneva church hosts EV experts on eco-friendly driving

Electric vehicles (EVs) are transforming the way people drive, offering cleaner, quieter and more cost-effective alternatives to gas-powered cars. Yet for many people, EV technology still feels unfamiliar or even intimidating.

To help clear up the confusion about going electric, the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva is inviting the community to attend a special free presentation at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the church’s historic building, 102 S. Second St. in downtown Geneva.

“EV 101: The Roadmap to Driving Electric Vehicles” will provide EV-curious consumers with the key information they need to know about owning and driving an EV.

Tracey McFadden, president of the Fox Valley Electric Auto Association, along with his wife, Dr. Kathleen McFadden, a retired business professor specializing in transportation and health care safety, will explore the many benefits of EVs, from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to lowering fuel and maintenance costs. They will also share their own personal experiences owning an EV.

Topics covered will include how EVs work and the different types of EVs available, with expert insight tips on how to shop for and buy an EV.

Information on EV batteries — types, cost, useful life span and recycling — as well as charging options, driving range, and the latest news on charging infrastructure will also be provided.

“Many people are curious about EVs but aren’t sure where to start,” said Tracey McFadden. “This talk is designed to answer their basic questions in a straightforward, practical way so that anyone considering an EV will walk away with the knowledge and confidence they need.”

“Although the federal EV tax credits have expired, many automakers are taking up the slack with special deals and discounts,” said church member Bill Koehl. “Driving an EV is still a sound financial decision that also helps save the planet.”

The one-hour presentation will include time for questions, a hands-on look at a few EVs up close, and opportunities to connect with local EV enthusiasts.
