Author discusses new book on Illinois Education Association history

On Saturday, Nov. 22, author Thomas Suhrbur will discuss his new book “Public Education and Social Reform: A History of the Illinois Education Association” at 2 p.m. in the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St.

The Illinois Education Association was founded in 1853 and Suhrbur ’s history covers the life span of the association within the larger story of state public education, a battleground for contentious social and economic issues. He pays attention to the impact of race, gender, religion, and tax policy on the IEA and public schools.

The association has evolved from a professional organization controlled by administrations and officials. Now through radical transformation, it is a teacher-led independent labor union. Multifaceted and up-to-date, public education and social reform describes the story of the organization and figures dedicated to sustaining and advancing public education. Admission is free.
