South Elgin to celebrate opening of new accessible boat launch Monday

A new accessible paddle sport launch in South Elgin will make it easier for people of all abilities to launch kayaks, canoes and paddleboards into the Fox River.

The village will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the launch, located on the east bank of the river in SEBA Park, 151 Water St., at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The project, one of five such launches recently installed along the Fox River in Illinois, was completed through a partnership with the Kane County Development Department and was paid for with American Rescue Plan Act funds.

“We’re grateful to the Kane County Development Department for investing in outdoor recreation and helping us further our mission to provide inclusive and engaging spaces for all,” Village President Steve Ward said in a news release. “This addition is a great asset for both residents and visitors looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the Fox River.”

Other launch sites include Clark Island Recreational Area in Batavia, Riverside Park in Carpentersville, Bartels Park in East Dundee and Montgomery Park in Montgomery.

The launch provides safe, convenient access to the Fox River for nonmotorized watercraft and includes accessibility features for people in wheelchairs or those who have mobility challenges. It complements the park’s existing inclusive amenities, such as accessible parking, restrooms, playground equipment and picnic areas.

The dock is made by BoardSafe, which has been making accessible launches for more than 10 years. The company’s website says the launches are designed with the input of adaptive athletes.

The launch starts flush to the sidewalk and features a mild slope and handrail. A boat slide runs parallel to the gangway then a transition bench and plank allow users to transfer onto the kayak using support handles above.
