Algonquin Garden Club supports local environmental initiatives with grants

The Algonquin Garden Club has an annual spring plant sale in May. The proceeds from that sale go directly to environmental causes, because “Nature's beauty is our duty.”

The Algonquin Garden Club presented the Land Conservancy of McHenry County with an environmental grant of $1,000 for their ongoing efforts toward native planting and also planting trees in McHenry County. Lisa Haderlein and Sarah Michehl, community ecologists, lead that effort.

A $200 horticultural grant was presented to the Dundee Middle School Garden Club. Katie Metcalf is leading their work on renovating the pollinator garden. Students will be learning about native plants, starting seeds, nurturing the plants, and transitioning them to the garden, while studying habitats and ecosystems.

The Algonquin Garden Club also presented Friends of Dundee Natural Areas with an Environmental grant of $1,000. Sue Bennett, board member, accepted that check. The group is instrumental in helping to restore natural areas, by removing invasive plants, and seeding for restoration.
