It’s the season to overcome fear
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear.”
— 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
It’s that time again, when the bright orange pumpkins go from the patch to the porch; the trees’ leaves are turning to a bright yellow, red and orange; and fall temperatures are chilling the air.
This time of year triggers the thoughts of decorations, costumes and candy. Since my childhood, I loved the idea of giving and receiving candy with my friends and neighbors. I also enjoyed dressing up as a ballerina with my fluffy tutu and a princess with a sparkling crown.
But I’ve never been a huge fan of the scary overtones of costumes and decorating. I even shuddered at the thought of going inside a haunted house. I think it’s because these things reveal the reality of the dark side of the spirit.
With all the shootings and recent events around the country, as well as internet bullies and scammers, fear seems to be a popular theme in today’s culture, not just on the Halloween scene.
The last thing we need is to trouble our souls with more fear. I believe fear is the devil’s tool to stifle our ability to trust in God’s goodness and rest in his love.
But there is a remedy to our fear. Jesus left us words of comfort. After warning the disciples how difficult living in this world can be (John 16:33), he instructed them — and us — not to fear. He told us that he came to offer us courage and comfort when we are feeling unsure, unsafe and worried.
The month of October, with its fun festivities and nature’s colorful displays, is a good time to practice overcoming being scared as we focus on the sacred reality of Christ.
Instead of shrinking back in fear, we can keep our focus on the love of God that strengthens our faith and overshadows our fearful moments.
