Elgin, Glenbard South, Lake Park, Fenton, St. Francis, Naperville Central secure victories
Coreyon Johnson recovered four fumbles, returning two of them for long touchdowns, leading Elgin to a 25-6 Upstate Eight West victory over Streamwood (2-5, 2-3) Friday night at Millennium Stadium.
With the victory the Maroons (5-2, 3-1) became playoff eligible for the first time since 2019.
Johnson, a senior, began the scoring in the first quarter when he ripped the ball out of a Streamwood ball carrier and raced 85 yards for a touchdown, giving Elgin a 7-0 lead.
On the Sabres’ next possession, Junior Angel-Luis Hernandez forced a fumble with a sack, and Johnson recovered, setting up an 11-yard touchdown run by junior tailback Anthony Foster (18 carries, 129 yards) to extend the lead to 13-0.
Streamwood trimmed the deficit to 13-6 on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Aden Sanchez to Damarion Smith.
Elgin seized control on Foster’s 1-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Jacob Rufino (12-of-23 passing, 82 yards) in the fourth quarter.
Johnson, who collected 10 tackles, including a pair for losses, and an interception, capped his night with a 31-yard scoop and score in the final seconds following Jamiere Moore’s forced fumble.
Hernandez added 8 tackles, including a sack, while Gavin Vituk had a sack, and Jiyion Holmes had a pair of pass deflections.
Sophomore Lamarin Powell rushed for 34 yards on 5 carries, while freshman Pierre Portis had a game-high 6 receptions for 44 yards.
Glenbard South 42, Ridgewood 7:
Sophomore tailback Elijah Donahue enjoyed a memorable night, rushing for 6 touchdowns during the Raiders’ 42-7 Upstate Eight East triumph over Ridgewood Friday night in Glen Ellyn.
Donahue’s 6-yard touchdown run gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead, but the Rebels (1-6, 0-4) quickly tied the score at 7-7.
From there the night belonged to Donahue, who found the end zone on runs covering 19, 26 and 43 yards to push the Raiders’ lead to 28-7 at halftime.
Following his 63-yard touchdown run, Donahue tallied his sixth TD in unconventional fashion.
Donahue fumbled the pitch, picked up the ball, evaded a tackler near the line of scrimmage and raced down the sideline 41 yards for the end zone.
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound workhorse gained 198 yards on the 6 TD runs, while helping the Raiders (5-2, 4-1) become playoff eligible for the 14th consecutive season.
Lake Park 41, St. Charles East 35:
Senior wide receiver Niko Menos caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Taysean Smith with two seconds remaining to cap a 28-second, 70-yard drive during Lake Park’s 41-35 DuKane Conference victory over visiting St. Charles East (1-6, 1-4) Friday night.
After the Lancers’ defense stopped the Saints on a fourth-and-4 play, Smith (20-of-29 passing, 291 yards) connected with Menos on a 27-yard pass to the Saints’ 43 with 20 seconds left.
The duo combined for a 15-yard completion on the next play, moving the ball to the 28 with 14 seconds remaining.
Smith hit senior Jaxon Acolatse for a 25-yard gain to the Saints’ 3, forcing a Lake Park timeout with eight seconds left.
An offside penalty moved the ball forward to the 1, setting the stage for the game-winning score.
Menos caught 13 passes for 214 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 67-yard score that put the Lancers (3-4, 1-4) up 35-28 midway through the third quarter.
The Saints tied it late in the third quarter on sophomore quarterback Cruz Herrera’s 9-yard TD pass to Sheko Gjokaj.
The teams combined for 56 first-half points — each with 28.
Anthony Orestano’s 56-yard touchdown run opened the scoring for the Lancers, who added Julian Joseph’s return of a blocked punt for a touchdown.
Herrera connected with Tyler Bradley for touchdown passes of 80 and 67 yards, respectively, while adding a 75-scoring strike to Gavin Matejko for the Saints.
Aurora Christian 49, Chicago Christian 7:
Senior quarterback Asa Johnson accounted for four touchdowns — two passing and two rushing — to lift Aurora Christian (5-2, 3-2) to a 49-7 Chicagoland Christian victory over Chicago Christian (2-5, 1-4) Friday night.
After Johnson’s 4-yard touchdown run gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead, Eli Anderson doubled the margin with his 70-yard interception for a score.
Johnson connected with Dominic Klimpke for a 55-yard TD pass to make it 21-0 before Chicago Christian answered on Joshua Crawford’s 1-yard TD run.
Klimpke’s second touchdown catch of the night extended the lead to 28-7, and sophomore Jalen Callaway helped seal the decision with a pair of second-half touchdown runs.
With the win the Eagles are playoff eligible for the eighth straight season.
Downers Grove South 30, Hinsdale South 27:
Josh Muhwezi provided the game-winning 32-yard field goal with 1:20 left during the Mustangs’ 30-27 West Suburban Gold victory over Hinsdale South (1-6, 1-5) Friday night.
Trailing 27-20 following Hornets quarterback Ben Miller’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Burton, the Mustangs tied it on James Sobkowiak’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Kanazawa.
Hinsdale South grabbed an early 14-0 lead on a pair of Burton touchdowns — a 1-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Miller.
Joseph Vieyra’s 3-yard TD run narrowed the gap to 14-7, but a successful halfback option pass for a score moments later pushed the Hornets’ lead back to 20-7.
The Mustangs (3-4, 3-3) tied it at 20-20 with back-to-back rushing touchdowns, setting the stage for a frenetic fourth quarter.
Fenton 33, East Aurora 6:
The Bison (3-4) kept their playoff hopes alive with Friday night’s 33-6 Upstate Eight crossover triumph over East Aurora (2-5).
After quarterback Ivan Medrano’s 6-yard touchdown run extended Fenton’s halftime lead to 13-0, Omar Diaz scored from 7 yards out to make it 20-0.
Diaz added a 30-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter before Ivan Luna’s 20-yard TD run capped the scoring.
Aurora Central Catholic 42, Living Word Lutheran 34:
Trey Seifrid scored on touchdown runs of 49, 40 and 11 yards, respectively, to lift Aurora Central Catholic to a 42-34 victory over Living Word Lutheran (2-6) Friday night in Aurora.
Quarterback Grant Bohr added a 47-yard run, part of the Chargers’ 335-yard day on the ground.
While extending its winning streak to three, ACC (6-1) clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2016 with its season-high point total.
St. Francis 42, Marian Catholic 20:
Brock Phillip connected with Dario Milivojevic (3 catches, 54 yards) on a pair of touchdown passes, while adding a 5-yard rushing score, during the Spartans’ 42-20 CCL/ESCC crossover victory over Marian Catholic (2-5) Friday night.
Tailback Tivias Caldwell, who finished with 128 yards on 10 carries, scored on a 68-yard run to open the game for the Spartans.
Phillip (12-of-18 passing, 202 yards) hit Milivojevic on a 15-yard TD pass to make it 14-7, before the duo struck again from 16 yards out, as the Spartans grabbed a 21-14 halftime advantage.
Senior receiver Zach Washington (7 receptions, 81 yards) caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Phillip in the second half before Iggy Amorrortu’s 10-yard TD run closed out the scoring, as the Spartans (5-2) became playoff eligible.
Naperville Central 28, Metea Valley 21, OT:
Junior quarterback Jackson Loth threw a touchdown pass to Dylan Martin on Naperville Central’s overtime possession, and sophomore defensive back Eron Kennedy’s interception sealed the Redhawks’ 28-21 overtime victory over Metea Valley (2-5, 0-5) Friday night.
After Caden Phillips’ interception helped set up Marquis Brown’s touchdown run to put Metea Valley in front, 21-14, Loth connected with Vince Bern on a touchdown pass to tie it at 21-21.
Loth finished with four touchdown passes, including first-half strikes to Kyle Clark and Martin.
Metea (2-5, 0-5), which suffered its 12th straight loss to Naperville Central dating back to 2015, took an early 14-0 lead on Zoelen Terry’s 57-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Charles Larson’s 72-yard scoring pass to CJ Jordan.
Addison Trail 45, Proviso East 16:
The Blazers (6-1, 5-0) maintained sole possession of first place in the West Suburban Gold while punching a ticket to the state playoffs for the third straight season with Friday night’s 45-16 win over Proviso East (1-6, 0-5) in Addison.
Senior tailback Gio Ortiz scored a pair of touchdowns for the Blazers, who led 14-0 after 1 quarter.
Waubonsie Valley 51, Stagg 0:
The Warriors (1-6, 1-3) snapped a 6-game losing streak with Friday night’s 51-0 Southwest Valley Red triumph over Stagg (0-7, 0-5).
Colin Ford scored 3 touchdowns to lead the Warriors, highlighted by his 50-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Nolan Alberson.
Alberson added a pair of rushing touchdowns, while senior Gavin Ali-Hanlon scored on a 51-yard run in the second half.
John Hung’s 50-yard TD run with a running clock capped the scoring.
Willowbrook 50, Proviso West 8:
The Warriors (4-3) kept their playoff hopes alive with Friday night’s 50-8 West Suburban Conference crossover victory over Proviso West (1-6).
Led by quarterback Jahonise Reed, Willowbrook will become playoff eligible with a win at Proviso East next weekend.
