True fairness in elections

Keith Raffel’s column on Sunday espouses an idea brought up every election cycle, that all electoral votes be ascribed to the national winner of the popular vote instead of the winner of the popular vote per state. It sounds so fair on paper, but in fact, all national elections would be determined by the big population centers, especially Los Angeles area and northeast New York.

There would be no point in campaigning anywhere else.

In fact, issues dear to big population centers would dominate all politics, and rural areas and smaller population states would have no representation in presidential elections.

So, wisely, electoral votes are tied to the number of senators (two per state) and the number of representatives each state sends to Congress, which is based in turn on the population per state.
