Golf sectional roundup: Hinsdale Central, Geneva boys advance to state; Hinsdale Central girls win sectional

Hinsdale Central and Geneva made the long drive west worth it Monday, finishing first and third, respectively at the Class 3A Moline boys golf sectional to punch tickets to this weekend’s state tournament.

The Red Devils won at Short Hills Country Club, shooting a 294 to finish four shots ahead of runner-up Moline.

The battle for the third qualifying spot was a tight one, with Geneva and Oswego East tying at 299 and the Vikings prevailing on with a fifth score of 78 to the Wolves’ 80.

Benet (301), Naperville North (303), Wheaton Warrenville South (304), and Downers Grove North (309) all finished within 10 shots of third place.

Batavia senior Ryan Augustine shot a 5-under 67 to tie Moline’s Isaac Rumler for the low score. Augustine made two birdies on the front and four on the back while only putting one bogey on his scoreboard during a phenomenal round.

Other top 10 scores included Wheaton Warrenville South’s Michael Johansen and Benet’s Caden Petersen shooting 71s to tie for fifth, and St. Charles East’s Anthony Solare, Naperville Central’s Graeme Cavanagh, Downers Grove North’s Colton Woodring and Downers Grove South’s Gabe Garron tying for ninth place with 73s.

In the team race, sophomore Michael Jorski tied for third with a 4-under 68 to lead Hinsdale Central to the title. Senior Thomas Plumpe was next with a 76 followed by freshman Eli Havens with a 76 and sophomore Will Geiersbach at 78.

Geneva’s best score came from sixth man Robbie Keller. The junior shot an even-par 72 and was supported by junior Blake Makowski at 73, senior Logan Novay (76), and seniors Ben Clairmont and Nick Torrence both at 78.

Girls golf

Junior Sara Han shot a 3-under 69 Monday at Broken Arrow Golf Club in Lockport to win medalist at the Class 2A Lockport sectional.

Han also led the Red Devils to the team championship with a 301. Lockport (311) and Downers Grove North (320) also qualified for state.

Olivia Zhang (75), Naya Shirsat (78) and Anika Danda (79) had the other counting scores for Hinsdale Central.

Senior Lexi Fertig led Downers Grove North with a 74, good for third place. Riley Prince shot an 80, Finley Werner 82 and Charlotte Labianco 84.
