West Chicago District 94 celebrates new STEP Center for students with diverse learning needs
The West Chicago Community High School District 94 community gathered on the evening of Sept. 16 to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new STEP (Success Through Education & Pathways) Center.
The new facility, which was completed in August, provides a dedicated space for the district's Transition Program for students with diverse learning needs.
The event brought together students and their families, board members, and school administration, all united in their support for this innovative program. A strong sense of joy and community filled the new space, which includes a simulated apartment to help students work on their post-secondary goals in employment, education and training, and independent living in a real-world setting.
The night highlighted the district’s commitment to creating opportunities for every student to achieve independence and success in adulthood.
Reflecting on the significance of the project, Superintendent Kurt Johansen praised the district's leadership.
“This is a shining example of what can be accomplished when you have a board of education that continues to put the educational needs of our students at the forefront of every decision they make,” Johansen said.
“The STEP Center allows a space where students with diverse learning needs feel empowered to achieve independence, responsibility, and success through their individualized education, real-world experiences, and supportive pathways,” said Megan Payleitner, director of specialized services. “In D94, we are committed to building life skills, vocational readiness, and self-advocacy to ensure every student accessing the STEP program confidently steps into adulthood ready to live their personal best. Our vision is a world where all young adults, regardless of ability, have access to meaningful education, opportunity, and community.”
Attendees toured the new apartment, seeing firsthand the results of the summer-long construction project that will benefit students for years to come.
