Mark Sanchez hospitalized after stabbing incident in Indianapolis

Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was injured in an apparent stabbing incident early Saturday morning in Indianapolis.

Sanchez, 38, was hospitalized in stable condition, according to Fox Sports. Sanchez is an NFL analyst for Fox and was scheduled to broadcast Sunday’s game there between the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders.

“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition,” the network said in a statement. “We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”

Fox did not respond to a request to provide further details about the incident in which Sanchez was injured.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to an inquiry about Sanchez by directing a reporter to a statement released via social media about an incident around 12:30 a.m. Saturday in which a man suffered “injuries consistent with stab wounds.”

The police said the incident “involved two adult males, resulting in one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds. Detectives believe this was an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence. … Both men received medical treatment. The man with the apparent stab wounds remains hospitalized in stable condition.”

Investigators reviewed video footage of the incident and the case “will be presented to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a charging decision,” according to the statement.

Police said in the statement that the department does not publicly “identify victims or suspects in incidents, unless the suspect is arrested, charged, or being sought.” It did not respond to a request to confirm that Sanchez is the man who was stabbed.

Sanchez spent time with six NFL teams — the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and Washington — over 10 seasons between 2009 and 2018. He helped the Jets to the AFC championship game in each of his first two seasons. The Jets selected him in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft after his collegiate career at USC.

Fox 59/CBS 4 in Indianapolis and TMZ reported that Sanchez had been injured in a stabbing.

The Indianapolis station reported that Sanchez was stabbed in the chest and underwent surgery. The other man had “significant injuries” and told police that he stabbed Sanchez in self-defense, the station reported.

That individual told police that he was making a food delivery when Sanchez became aggressive after telling him that he could not park his vehicle in an alley and had to leave, according to the Fox/CBS station, which also reported that Sanchez was not cooperative with police when they arrived on the scene.
