Must tragedy occur to stop heavy-handed tactics?

Yesterday we learned of guns drawn by ICE agents at a family’s home in a residential neighborhood in Naperville; a suburb with one of the lowest crime rates in the country. The problem? Potentially undocumented workers putting on a new roof.

How does that make sense? It doesn’t, and for a very important reason related to a key factor: Risk to the community at large any time guns are drawn.

A city or town’s police force always considers this when stops, detainments or arrests are made. Based on this and other actions by ICE, there’s nothing to suggest they do, too, which makes for a dangerous situation for every one of us.

What will it take for ICE’s heavy-handed actions to stop? A tragedy? That’s the last thing this country needs, with emotions high while treading uncharted waters.
