Man gets 16 years for carjacking person in drive-through
A man has pleaded guilty to carjacking a person in the drive-through of a Dunkin’ restaurant in Aurora.
Ivan Martinez, 23, of the 0-100 block of Clay Court in Montgomery, pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated vehicular hijacking. He accepted a sentence of 16 years in prison.
Kane County prosecutors told Judge Julia Yetter that on Sept. 1, 2024, a woman was in the drive-through lane of the restaurant, in the 2900 block of Kirk Road, when Martinez approached her holding an object that appeared to be a gun.
He pointed it at her and told her to get out of the car, which she did.
The event was captured on a dash-mounted camera of a vehicle behind the victim’s car.
Chicago police stopped Martinez in the victim’s vehicle, a Chevrolet Camaro, about 90 minutes later. There was no gun in the car.
Martinez was on parole at the time for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance out of Kendall County. He had also been convicted in Kane County in a 2021 aggravated unlawful use of a weapon case, according to a news release from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.
Martinez will have to serve at least half the sentence before being eligible for parole. He was given credit for 396 days that he’s been detained in the Kane County jail.
