Girls golf roundup: St. Charles North, Libertyville, Benet among regional champions

St. Charles North sophomore Kayla Beu took any suspense out of who was the best golfer at the Class 2A Sycamore regional Tuesday with a 10-shot victory.

Beu opened her round at the Sycamore Golf Club with a birdie on the 389-yard par-4 first hole, then after a couple hiccups on the front nine, she birdied five holes on the back nine for an even-par 71.

The North Stars also captured the team championship with a 351. They will be joined at next week’s Waubonsie Valley sectional at Springbrook Golf Course by St. Charles East (367) and South Elgin (369).

St. Charles North’s other counting scores came from sophomore Abigail Gizewicz (82), junior Taylor Nelson (95) and senior Avianna Kolb (103).

St. Charles East was led by Emily Geurts (86), Charlotte Tassone (88), Avery Szuch (95) and Olivia Vosburgh (98).

South Elgin pulled out the third and final sectional qualifying score by four shots over both Batavia and Geneva behind Autumn Burnett (86), Lexi Albertson (88), Avina Somvang (95) and Sophia Wolf (100).

Batavia’s Avery Sheehan finished second behind Beu with an 81. Other top 10 golfers included Geneva’s Paige Flanigan (86) and Hampshire’s Estancia Arenas (89).

Warren regional: It was a good day for Kenzie Christie and her Libertyville teammates at Bittersweet Golf Club in Gurnee.

Christie, a sophomore, shot an 80 to take medalist honors, sophomore Abby Feltz was right behind at 82, and the Wildcats finished at 352 to win the regional going away. Claire Weadick added a 90, good for sixth place.

Carmel (388) and Lakes (413) nabbed the other two spots for next Monday’s New Trier sectional at Winnetka Golf Club.

Juniors Gabriella Stephens (82) and Idaly Sereno (87) led Carmel while Lakes was paced by Ava Swearengen (86) and Alysia Friedel Foat (95).

Antioch sophomore Marleigh Gaulin tied for seventh with a 95, while Wauconda’s McKenna Powers, Grayslake Central’s Savannah Stryker and Mundelein’s Bridget Niziolek tied for ninth with 98s.

Glenbard West regional: Benet had an impressive day at Bloomingdale Golf Club, totaling a 320 to win the regional by 38 shots over sectional qualifiers Wheaton Warrenville South and St. Francis (359).

Freshman Lauren Gauss led Benet with a 4-over 75 that included birdies on No. 2 and No. 9. Reina Maceren was right behind at 76, and Kate Lewis (81) and Madelyn Maldonado (88) also had counting scores.

Brooklyn Calabrese and Grace Hamann led the Tigers with an 84 and 86, respectively.

The Spartans tied for third with Naperville North but advanced to sectionals by one shot on a fifth-card tiebreaker. Elizabeth Hornicak and Hannah Grivetti led St. Francis with 86s.

Naperville North senior Addyson Ciganek also shot a 75 like Gauss, a round that started with a 42 on the front but ended with a 33 on the back with an eagle on the par-5 14th hole and a birdie on the par-5 18th.

West Aurora regional: Metea Valley freshman Maya Shah shot a 75 at Bliss Creek in Sugar Grove to finish second individually behind only Oswego East sophomore Alli Wiertel’s 5-under 65.

Oswego East also won the team championship with a 310. Metea Valley finished second at 325 to also advance to sectionals.

Waubonsie Valley junior Mina Shyam took fourth with a 76.

Hinsdale South regional: Lockport pulled out a 1-shot victory over Hinsdale Central at Carriage Greens, 314-315.

Junior Anika Danda led the Red Devils with a 75, good for third overall. Amelia Gambla was next with a 77, Olivia Zhang shot an 81 and Sara Han an 82.

Downers Grove North nabbed the third spot advancing to sectionals with a 328. Charlotte Labianco led the Trojans with a 77.

Downers Grove South senior Miah Wanserski shot a 4-over 74 to tie Lockport’s Angelica Kwak for the low round.

Marengo regional: In Class 1A action, Rosary captured the championship at Marengo Ridge with a 385. Alexa Henry led the way with an 87 for second place.

Aurora Central Catholic junior Nora Schwartz won the individual title with an 81.

Schaumburg Christian senior Aiya Ladero carded an 88 for third, followed by Westminster Christian sophomore Colbie Canning and St. Edward senior Kendall Pemberton with 90s.
