Police: Standoff resolved peacefully after man strikes mom with pipe in Gurnee
Officers from eight police agencies safely resolved a barricade situation in a Gurnee apartment following a domestic disturbance there Saturday night, authorities said Sunday.
Police responded to the apartment building on the 400 block of North Hunt Club Road around 6 p.m. after a 68-year-old woman was struck in the head with a metal pipe by her son, Gurnee police said.
The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of the head injury and is expected to recover, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as a 45-year-old Gurnee man, remained inside the apartment. Officers established a perimeter and worked to resolve the situation, making multiple verbal attempts to have him exit voluntarily, police said in a news release.
Officers from the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System mutual aid agency eventually entered the apartment and took the man into custody. He was taken to Condell hospital for a medical evaluation, authorities said.
Gurnee police said Sunday they are preparing an arrest warrant on a charge of aggravated domestic battery.
“The coordinated response from officers and partnering agencies contributed to resolving this situation safely and efficiently,” Deputy Police Chief Jeremy Gaughan said. “We appreciate that no additional injuries occurred and that everyone involved remained safe.”
Gurnee officials said they decided to call in mutual aid due to the suspect’s active warrant for failure to appear in court and a history involving violence.
During the barricade situation, residents on the same floor of the apartment building were temporarily evacuated as a precaution while officers continued negotiations and awaited additional resources.
The matter remains under investigation, police said.
