Officials: DuPage resident’s death related to West Nile virus

Public health officials have confirmed a West Nile virus-related death in DuPage County — the first of the year.

A resident in their 80s who became ill in August has died. So far in 2025, 11 human virus cases have been reported to date in DuPage.

“Please protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites by taking necessary precautions,” DuPage Health Department Executive Director Adam Forker said in a statement Thursday.

Those over 60, and those with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease, are at greater risk for serious illness. The health department reminds people to protect themselves against mosquito bites by following the three “Rs of defense.”

Reduce the number of mosquitoes and eliminate standing water around your home. Repel mosquitoes by using insect repellent containing DEET. And report areas where water sits for more than a week.
