Cross country: Warren’s Wilson, Cary-Grove’s Tenopir take titles at Dawson invite

The Maine South girls cross country team had a great performance Saturday at the Bill Dawson Invite held at Warren's O'Plaine Road Campus.

The Hawks were able to hold off runner-up Glenbrook North 104-119 for the title of the 19-team meet while Fremd was a close third with 123 points.

Cary-Grove (163 points) placed fourth followed by Crystal Lake South (196 points) in sixth, Mundelein (233) in eighth, Conant (240) in ninth, and Elk Grove (277) in 11th.

Warren junior Kaylee Wilson was impressive in winning the 3-mile race by 20 seconds with a time of 17:58.5.

"I was only a few seconds off my PR so I'm really happy with it," said Wilson. "I think we have a really good team, they're very supportive, and they're always there for you."

Elk Grove's Reagan Malone took fifth place followed by Maine South's Tessie Bradley in sixth, Mundelein's Precious Oyebanji in seventh, Cary-Grove's Alexandra Santoyo in eighth, Maine South's Abby Seurynck in ninth, and Fremd's Adeline Dietrich in 10th.

"We had a good overall team race with a No. 6 (Bradley), and our No. 2 (Seurynck) ran really well," said Maine South coach Jeff Downing. "We just have to hold our position better because we faded a little in the third mile, but we're ecstatic that we won."

Crystal Lake South's Caroline Lucas placed 12th followed by Conant's Lily Schaefers (13th), Carmel Catholic's Juliet Bing (14th), Fremd's Isa Hasty (15th), Elk Grove's Elena Bis (17th), and Grayslake Central's Jordan Sutter (18th).

"Despite having to stop at the 2-mile due to some breathing issues, she (Dietrich) did great, and she overcame a big mental barrier there," said Fremd coach Joe Marcin. "Isa stayed mentally strong, she battled back and forth with a couple of girls, and finished strong."

Grayslake North's Madison Petersen placed 19th to outdistance Crystal Lake South's Laynie Ripley (20th), Maine South's Emma Fuentes (21st), and Conant's Megan Schaefers (22nd).

"It was hot and we've had a big training week so she (Petersen) will go much faster than that," said Grayslake North coach Matt Petersen, who is Madison's father. "Our No. 2 runner (Lucy Roscoe) was not here today, but Julia (Flannery) ran solid and she looks in good shape so that it exciting."

Lakes was led by Lily Brooks in 29th while Maine South got a 31st from Isla Craig Naples.

"I think Alexandra (Santoyo) has been a really nice addition to our team, and four of our top five today are new runners," said Cary-Grove coach Mark Anderson. "She (Santoyo) gets better as the race gets longer, and she has really excelled in the 3-mile racing."

Boys race: Buffalo Grove's boys cross country squad displayed some strong running at the Bill Dawson Invite Saturday morning, but Glenbrook South edged the Bison 57-68 for first place in the 21-team meet.

Mundelein took third place with 140 points on Warren's 3-mile O'Plaine Campus course to outrun Grant (167 points) in fourth, and Crystal Lake South (170 points in fifth). Cary-Grove nipped the host Blue Devils 213-217 for seventh place.

Cary-Grove senior Jameson Tenopir easily rolled to first place in 15:01.7 despite the hot weather conditions. Buffalo Grove's Riley Wold (15:18.7) was the runner-up followed by Grant's Maxx Haas (15:20.9) in third.

"I'm really happy with it, it was really hot out here, but I didn't quite get the speed I was looking for," said Tenopir. "I want to win state that's my goal, and if these next few weeks go how I want them to I'll have a really great shot of winning."

Antioch's Carson Lanners placed fifth in the big field followed by Buffalo Grove's Nate Lipani in seventh, Mundelein's Elijah Mendoza in ninth, CLS's Joseph Gonzalez in 10th, Schaumburg's Radhwan Alhamedi in 11th, and Warren's Adru Koehl in 12th.

"We had some great performances, but we definitely have some room for improvement especially between our three to five split," said Buffalo Grove coach Miguel Parra Garcia. "We have bigger goals to perform great at the end of the season, and Riley (Wold) ran great today."

The Bison also got a 15th from Spencer Flershem while Grant teammates Logan Terryberry and Nathan Kempf finished 16th and 17th, respectively. Cary-Grove's Aaron Milewski placed 18th to edge Buffalo Grove's Will Capito (19th), and CLS's Logan Aarseth (20th).

"We couldn't have caught the first two teams today, but we've got to be closer," said Mundelein coach Kurt Rutz. "Andrew Weaver (30th) moved up the whole race and Elijah (Mendoza) has been sick, but he's getting stronger every week and he's almost there."

Caleb Holloway led Stevenson in 21st followed by CLS's Chad Wehby (22nd), Warren's Brody Wiley (24th), Buffalo Grove's Grant Preusker (25th), Mundelein's Izic Miller (27th), Buffalo Grove's Alex Hernandez (28th), and Mundelein's Nathan McCreight (29th).

"We ran kids at their level today so we ran a couple of kids in the fresh-soph meet that would have run varsity today," said Grant coach Jeff Durlak. "He (Haas) just keeps getting better and better every week, he's kind of just running his race and he doesn't let the pace of the race dictate what he does."
