Elgin man convicted of murder in stabbing death

An Elgin man was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday in the stabbing death of a woman in 2024.

A Kane County jury found Timothy Edwards, 66, guilty of killing 64-year-old Cheryl Aricioglu. He stabbed her July 2, 2024, in his apartment on the 1300 block of Fleetwood Drive.

His attorney, Derek Dlhy, argued that Edwards and Aricioglu were in a “drug-fueled relationship” and that an argument between them escalated. Dlhy asked the jury to instead consider a second-degree murder conviction.

The prosecution acknowledged that Aricioglu was intoxicated on cocaine.

She was stabbed several times in the chest and had defensive wounds to her hands.

Edwards’ daughter had called the police to check on her father. When they arrived, Edwards let them into the apartment and directed them to the bedroom where Aricioglu was found.

The next court date for Edwards is scheduled for Nov. 5.
