Elgin Community College celebrates Latinx Heritage Month with ‘Sazón & Soul’

Elgin Community College invites students, families, and the community to join its 2025 Latinx Heritage Month celebration, honoring the rich culture, history, and contributions of the Latinx community.

Themed “Sazón & Soul,” this year’s programming blends music, dance, art, food, and cultural experiences designed to inspire connection and pride.

From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, ECC will be showcasing events and experiences that uplift Latinx culture while fostering community, connection, and learning. As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, ECC is proud to honor the stories and traditions that shape its students and community.

Kick off Latinx Heritage Month with music, food, and community with “Bienvenida” from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, on the Lakeside Patio at Building B. Meet ECC leaders, connect with students and alumni, and discover resources while enjoying an evening of dance, culture, and celebration. Families are welcome.

On Oct. 4-5, experience a powerful evening of folk dance, music, and storytelling with BFH (formerly known as Ballet Folklórico Huehuecoyotl). With every rhythm and step, they pay tribute to those who came before and pave the way for those who will follow. Folk dance is more than movement. It is a living expression of our heritage, flowing through generations with pride and purpose. Through dance, they learn nobility, the ability to recognize and honor the contributions of others, to uplift those around them, and to give selflessly. “Corridos y Canciones” will be at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in the Blizzard Theatre at ECC Arts Center, 1700 Spartan Drive. Tickets are $25, $22 for seniors or $15 for age 10 or younger.

Later in the month, visit ECC’s community altar to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and honor loved ones with this traditional Mexican remembrance. The Día de los Muertos Ofrenda will be on display from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 27-31 and Nov. 3 in the E. Max von Isser Gallery of Art in Building B.

Students are invited to immerse themselves in Mexican art and culture at one of Chicago’s most celebrated cultural institutions with a field trip to the National Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. The trip will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. It is for students only (registration required at tinyurl.com/LatinxTrip25)
