Glenbard South, Montini, Fenton, Glenbard East, South Elgin, secure football victories
Senior defensive lineman Cecil Tousant recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter to thwart a West Chicago drive as Glenbard South (2-1, 1-0) held on for a 34-27 Upstate Eight East victory Friday night in West Chicago.
The Raiders, who forced 3 turnovers, had another one of the game’s momentum changers when sophomore defensive back Elijah Donahue raced across the field to knock the ball from Wildcats quarterback Carter Naranjo just before he reached the corner of the end zone.
Following a discussion near the end zone, the referees ruled it a touchback, giving the Raiders the ball at their own 20-yard line when they were trailing 15-8.
Raiders quarterback Tommy Bauman threw a pair of touchdown passes — a 39-yard strike to tight end Troy Oleksak, and a 38-yard toss to Kenneth Brown to give Glenbard South a 22-21 advantage.
Glenbard South, which converted 5 of its 11 third-down plays, finished with 458 yards, including 283 passing yards.
Running behind senior offensive lineman Ean Arizmendi, Naranjo carried the ball 28 times for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns, while adding a pair of 2-point conversion runs.
Naranjo, who now has 10 touchdown runs in 3 games, averages 201 yards rushing a contest.
Montini 28, Marist 21:
Quarterback Izzy Abrams (21 of 31, 285 yards) connected with Nico Castaldo for a 6-yard touchdown pass with 6:16 left to break a 21-21 deadlock, and the Broncos (3-0) came up with a late defensive stand during their 28-21 win over Marist (0-3) on the 13th anniversary of the Johnny Weiger Memorial Game in Lombard.
Linebacker Santino Tenuta stripped the ball from a Marist runner inside the 1-yard line, and freshman defensive end Blake Pohlman recovered the fumble in the end zone to clinch the victory.
Abrams added a pair of touchdown runs, while also tossing an 11-yard TD pass to Damacio Ortegon.
Orlando Greco, Laddie Asay, and Tenuta each tallied 14 tackles, while Payton Nelson added an interception for the Broncos.
“Our guys hung in there all night and competed,” said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky. “They showed the type of toughness and resiliency that we know we are going to need down the road to have success in the Catholic League and beyond.”
Fenton 55, Elmwood Park 6:
Senior tailback Omar Diaz scored 5 touchdowns, highlighted by his 98-yard run early in the first quarter, during Fenton’s 55-6 Upstate Eight East victory over Elmwood Park (0-3, 0-1) in Bensenville.
Diaz added scoring runs of 44, 49, 2 and 5 yards, as the Bison grabbed a 35-6 first-quarter lead.
Junior Logan Haywood provided a defensive score with his 44-yard fumble recovery, while junior Angel Duran added TD runs of 22 and 20 yards for Fenton (2-1, 1-0).
Glenbard East 30, Bartlett 15:
Trailing 15-14 at halftime, Glenbard East (2-1) rallied for 16 unanswered second-half points on the way to a 30-15 Upstate Eight crossover victory over host Bartlett (0-3).
Quarterback Michael Nee tossed a pair of first-half touchdown passes covering 14 and 46 yards, respectively, to Malachi Miller, while Kedrick Dennis’ 6-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the third quarter put the Rams on top to stay, 20-15.
After a 22-yard field goal by Moises Velazquez made it 23-15, Dennis sealed it with a 35-yard TD run with 1:47 left.
Vitalik Krysko caught a 53-yard touchdown pass, while Olivier Chrapek booted a 43-yard field goal for the Hawks.
Glenbard West 26, Oak Park-River Forest 7:
The Hilltoppers improved to 3-0, 1-0 in West Suburban Silver play with their 26-7 road win over Oak Park-River Forest (1-2, 0-1).
Quarterback Jack Walti completed 11 of 19 passes for 99 yards, highlighted by a touchdown pass to Jaylen McMiller (4 catches, 49 yards), while Daniel Taylor added a TD run for the Hilltoppers.
Juniors Aiden Strothoff and AJ Rayford each had interceptions for Glenbard West.
South Elgin 55, Larkin 13:
Gavin Mueller scored on touchdown runs covering 17, 72 and 50 yards, respectively, and added a 14-yard TD catch of a pass from Carter McDonald to help lift South Elgin (1-2, 1-0) to a 55-13 Upstate Eight West win over Larkin (0-3, 0-1).
Jeremiah Carrera had a pair of touchdowns on punt returns (35, 39 yards), while Darrion Thurman added an 11-yard TD run for the Storm.
Elijah Walker scored on an 11-yard run for the Royals, while Julius Yandell Jr. added an interception.
IC Catholic Prep 33, St. Ignatius 12:
Foley Calcagno recorded a team-high 12 tackles and added a touchdown run to help lead IC Catholic Prep (3-0) to a 33-12 victory over St. Ignatius in Elmhurst.
Sophomore Grant Bowen caught 3 passes for 79 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while QB Nate Lang finished 12 of 16 for 203 yards.
Sandburg 5, Naperville Central 3:
Drew Drzonek’s 39-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining proved to be the difference during Sandburg’s 5-3 Southwest Valley Blue win over Naperville Central (0-3, 0-1).
After a high snap on a punt resulted in a safety for Sandburg (3-0, 1-0), the Redhawks grabbed a 3-2 lead after three quarters on Gavin Ellison’s 40-yard field goal.
Matt Guerin, Paul Peradotti, Jax Pytlak and Joe Clermont had sacks for Naperville Central.
Wheaton Academy 49, Chicago Christian 14:
Junior quarterback Colton Miller completed 11 of 13 passes for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns, while tailback Tyler Jones rushed for 197 yards on 10 carries with 3 touchdowns during the Warriors’ 49-14 Chicagoland Christian victory over Chicago Christian (1-2, 0-1).
Tommy Sommer caught 2 passes for 80 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while John Mazzarella had a 43-yard TD reception, as Wheaton Academy (1-2, 1-0) snapped a 2-game skid.
Defensively, juniors Ethan Brooks and Logan Oros each had 6 tackles, while Jackson From added an interception.
Sophomore Daniel Jarvis was 7 for 7 on PAT kicks.
West Aurora 48, Elgin 16:
Quarterback Mason Atkins completed 10 of 14 for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns during West Aurora’s 49-16 Upstate Eight West victory over Elgin (2-1, 0-1).
Lesroy Tittle caught a pair of touchdown passes and added a 69-yard punt return for a score, while senior Zach Toma (3 catches, 113 yards) had a 62-yard TD reception for the Blackhawks, who led 42-0 at halftime.
Lamarin Powell (5 carries, 100 yards) tallied a pair of touchdowns for the Maroons, including an 80-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Streamwood 27, East Aurora 7:
Justin Brown’s 37-yard touchdown run up the middle lifted the Sabres (1-2, 1-0) to their first win of the season, a 27-7 Upstate Eight West triumph over East Aurora (1-2, 0-1).
Lorenzo Robles recovered a fumble, while Shazeb Ahmed added a sack for Streamwood.
Aurora Christian 63, St. Edward 0:
Quarterback Asa Johnson threw 5 first-quarter touchdown passes — the first 4 to Dominic Klimpke — to lead Aurora Christian (3-0, 1-0) to a 63-0 Chicagoland Christian triumph over St. Edward (1-2, 0-1) in Elgin.
Klimpke, who opened with an 11-yard TD reception, caught a pair of 5-yard scoring passes before hauling in a 54-yard TD screen pass.
Johnson capped the opening quarter by connecting with Eli Anderson for a 54-yard touchdown pass, as the Eagles grabbed a 34-0 lead in the first 12 minutes.
Freshman Luke Baumann had touchdown runs of 32 and 43 yards, respectively, while Jalen Callaway added a 10-yard TD run for the Eagles, who led 50-0 at halftime.
Aurora Central Catholic 36, Walther Christian 0:
The Chargers improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2016 with Saturday’s 36-0 victory over host Walther Christian in Melrose Park.
