Local nonprofit marks 12 million hygiene products distributed, 15 years of service and expansion into Kane County
As communities across the country recognize National Diaper Need Awareness Week Sept. 15-21, local nonprofit Keeping Families Covered is marking a series of major milestones in the fight against hygiene insecurity.
Founded in 2010 by Wadsworth mom Ann Marie Mathis, the organization recently marked the distribution of more than 10.6 million diapers, 1.5 million period products and 1.2 million incontinence supplies across the region. In addition to current packing and distribution locations in Lake County and McHenry County, the group will also expand its footprint with a third location in Kane County later this fall.
“I started this work in my basement as a young mom of seven, overwhelmed by the sheer number of diapers my family went through,” Mathis said. “I couldn’t stop thinking about what I would do if I couldn’t keep up with that need. Diaper Need Awareness Week will be over on Sept. 21, but thousands of our neighbors will continue to struggle daily. Knowing that keeps me motivated and determined to keep growing.”
What began as a side project has grown into a movement powered by volunteers, community partners and supporters who believe every family deserves the essentials to thrive. The new location will open as the organization celebrates its 15th anniversary serving families and the seventh anniversary of its mobile distribution program, which brings essentials directly to families who might otherwise go without. The organization also recently unveiled a new brand and website, making it easier for families and community partners to connect with resources and support.
With 20 team members contributing more than 2,000 hours of service each year, the organization distributes products through two channels: direct service via its mobile pantry and a partner network of agencies that order supplies for the families they serve.
Looking ahead, the nonprofit is inviting supporters to its annual Casino Night fundraiser on Oct. 11 at Wild Onion Brewery in Lake Barrington.
“We hope many local families and businesses will come out for a fun night that helps thousands in our community maintain their health and dignity,” Mathis said.
