Student in custody after Rolling Meadows police say gun brought to middle school
A student at Plum Grove Middle School was arrested Tuesday after they were accused of bringing a gun to school, Rolling Meadows police said.
Police said they were notified by the school’s administrative staff. The weapon was immediately confiscated and secured by police officers.
The student was arrested on felony charges related to possessing a firearm on school grounds and will be petitioned into juvenile court.
A search of the school revealed no additional weapons, and no students, staff members or parents were threatened or injured, police said.
This investigation is ongoing, police said. Police are working with the school and Palatine Township Elementary District 15.
School officials e-mailed families Wednesday about the investigation. The letter confirmed the weapon was found after dismissal on Tuesday.
School officials described police activity as “a very thorough” investigation.
“We are not able to share specific information due to confidentiality requirements with minor students,” the letter read. “What we can share is that everyone is safe and no one is in current danger of harm due to this incident.”
Social workers and counselors were available to students Wednesday and will continue to be available, officials said.
“Our district crisis team was also present to provide an additional layer of support for our students and staff,” the letter read.
Two additional Rolling Meadows police officers were sent to the school Wednesday morning in addition to the school’s existing resource officer.
“We are incredibly grateful for the partnership with the Rolling Meadows Police Department and that our team at Plum Grove as well as (Superintendent) Laurie Heinz and our district office acted swiftly and addressed the situation very quickly,” said Samantha Bray Ader, District 15’s school board president.
