Wrapping up a busy weekend of high school sports action

The weekends are always a busy time for us, what with tournaments going on in sports like soccer and volleyball, and invitationals in cross country and tennis. See what kept us busy this weekend.

But first, see what columnist Dave Oberhelman wrote about a one-time suburban high school athlete now coaching college athletes in the Big Ten. Oberhelman describes how her experience as a high school athlete here in the suburbs helped make her the successful big-time coach she is today. She not only credits her own high school coach, but her parents, also high school coaches in the suburbs.

Correspondent Bill McLean was out early to report on the girls tennis action at Fremd’s invitational.

Correspondent John Bumbales was at Grayslake Central’s cross country course early Saturday morning, probably waiting at the finish line to talk to the winners as the broke the tape.

Likewise, correspondent Lou Nunez Jr. was up early Saturday to get to Elk Grove’s cross country course for another invitational involving boys and girls athletes.

Correspondent Dick Quagliano backtracked on some of Friday night’s football action, including an important win for Round Lake. That win not only ended a long losing streak, Round Lake did it with an impressive blowout.

Correspondent Craig Brueske also tracked down information on football games we couldn’t get to Friday night. Want to know who won and how in DuPage County and the Fox Valley? Brueske has the skinny.

Don’t see the football team you’re interested in here? Go to dailyherald.com to find our story from Friday night. For instance, here’s our game of the week, Palatine’s overtime victory over Prospect in a game that truly proved to be one of the best of the Week 2 football action.

Looking for other results? As always, we have scores in all fall varsity sports from around the suburbs. Behind the scenes, clerk Marti Whitehouse works hard to track down as many results as possible, and we thank the coaches who help by emailing us their scores.

As always, thank you for reading the Daily Herald and supporting local journalism.
