Daily Herald photo contest winners for August 2025
At the top of the August amateur photo contest is Marianne Myrick’s beautiful photo of the water lily plants in the pond near the Robert R. McCormick House at Cantigny in Wheaton. The Glen Ellyn resident writes, “The reflections in the water create interesting photographs.”
In second place is Bob Warren’s photo of a Great Blue Heron snapping up a bass in his strong bill while wading through the waters of Lake Zurich. The Lake Zurich resident said the photo took several minutes to capture the fishing excursion.
Coming in third place is Mike Weimer capturing a striking photo last month of a Cooper’s Hawk resting on his backyard fence after confronting one of the neighborhood squirrels trying to walk along the top of the fence. The St. Charles resident writes, “I love the hawk’s beautiful colors, regal stance, and its ‘don’t mess with me’ talons!”
Fourth place goes to this touching photo by Pat Martin of grandpa walking his three grandchildren through a forest preserve. The Des Plaines resident writes, “I like this photo because the families live at least an hour away from each other and grandpa sees them only a few times a year. They all look so happy!”
An honorable mention goes to Sandy Dubick of Round Lake Heights for her eye-catching photo of a Double-breasted Cormorant catching some rays while perched on a decoy swan.
