Taiwan participation in U.N. critical for U.S.

A rules-based international system depends on transparency, democratic values and inclusive cooperation. Yet the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has increasingly manipulated the United Nations (U.N.) to advance its geopolitical agenda. The United States has a strategic interest in countering this influence. Taiwan’s participation would offer a vital counterbalance to communist China’s dominance and provide the U.S. a reliable partner in defending democratic norms and global stability.

Taiwan’s expertise in democratic governance, sustainable development and technological innovation aligns with many U.N. priorities. Its inclusion would strengthen international cooperation and disrupt Beijing’s efforts to monopolize global narratives.

Beijing has misused U.N. General Assembly Resolution 2758 to block Taiwan’s participation under false pretenses. This resolution does not grant any PRC authority over Taiwan. Continued exclusion undermines the U.N.’s credibility and sets a dangerous precedent for politicization. The U.N. was founded to serve all peoples — not to be weaponized for suppression.

Current practices barring Taiwan passport holders from U.N. premises and denying Taiwanese journalists access to cover U.N. events violate basic human rights, including freedom of the press.

As authoritarian influence rises, securing Taiwan’s place in U.N. discussions is essential for maintaining open dialogue, reliable information flow and the integrity of international law. Taiwan’s presence would help steer the U.N. toward genuine global priorities rather than political pressures.

The stakes go beyond Taiwan — they affect the legitimacy and effectiveness of the U.N. itself. The United States must lead efforts to ensure Taiwan’s participation in U.N. meetings and mechanisms, safeguarding the future of international cooperation from undue political interference.
