Lack of kratom regulation causing health risks in Illinois
I am a retired nurse practitioner and health care executive. I have used natural whole leaf kratom powder for over six years to reduce my pain from multiple rare neurological disorders. It has allowed me to regain my health, strength and wellness. Most importantly, it enables me to enjoy the greatest joy in my life — our three grandchildren.
I have personally seen benefits of natural kratom leaf for those with chronic pain like me, as well as those struggling with PTSD, anxiety and addictions. One of the most important safety mechanisms of natural kratom products is that it doesn’t lead to respiratory depression like classical opioids. Many consumers claim, and I would attest, that natural kratom leaf can be lifesaving. I’ve seen its benefits extend beyond pain relief, offering hope to those struggling with PTSD, anxiety and addiction.
However, the lack of regulation in Illinois threatens access to safe, quality natural kratom leaf. Without proper oversight, the market has seen a rise in synthetic substances, such as concentrated synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine (7OH), which pose significant risks.
On July 29, 2025, HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary held a press conference to address this issue, recommending that concentrated synthetic 7OH be scheduled as a controlled substance. Dr. Makary clarified, “Our focus is not on kratom leaf; our focus is on 7OH.” He noted that while trace amounts of 7OH occur naturally in leaf kratom, concentrated forms, like 7OH, are novel opioids that lack a history of safe use, have no data to support their safety, and are dangerous.”
Leaf kratom has been used safely for centuries in Southeast Asia and for decades in the US. Leaf kratom is a natural dietary ingredient. In contrast, synthetic concentrated 7OH opioid products are unapproved new drugs, flooding the market due to Illinois’ lack of consumer protections beyond an 18-and-over age restriction. This regulatory gap endangers consumers and risks undermining the benefits of natural leaf kratom.
It is essential for kratom to be safely regulated and available because anyone is just one accident, illness, or disease away from needing help to reduce severe pain, anxiety, depression, or addiction. With all my years of experience and knowledge, I haven’t encountered a substance, prescribed or over the counter, with better efficacy and safety than leaf kratom. Due to strict opioid prescribing guidelines many patients experiencing severe chronic pain are unable to find appropriate relief. Natural kratom offers a safe alternative for many individuals. It’s vital to protect access that millions of Americans have found helpful for their well-being.
The Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) has been passed in 18 states. There were six kratom bills introduced but not passed in the Illinois state legislature this spring. It’s time our representatives work together to provide regulations to protect kratom while protecting citizens from untested synthetic products. The lack of regulation has allowed the marketing of untested and potentially unsafe products. I urge Illinois residents to contact their representatives and advocate for the KCPA. Let’s make Illinois the 18th state to prioritize consumer safety and access to natural leaf kratom.
