BBB advisory: Scammers don’t take holidays off

As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Better Business Bureau is urging consumers to stay vigilant against a surge of seasonal scams that could derail holiday plans.

Whether you're traveling, shopping, attending events, or making home improvements, scammers are ready to take advantage of the increased activity and last-minute decisions that often accompany the holiday.

“Labor Day is meant for celebration and relaxation,” said Steve Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB. “But it’s also a prime opportunity for scammers, who know people are distracted and may let their guard down. A little caution can go a long way in protecting your money and personal information.”

Top scams to watch for this Labor Day:

Vacation rental scams: Fraudsters post fake listings for vacation homes or hotels, often at enticingly low prices. They demand up-front payment and disappear. Always verify listings, read reviews, and book through trusted platforms.

Fake event tickets: With concerts, festivals, and sports events in full swing, counterfeit tickets are a growing problem. Stick to official ticket vendors and be wary of deals on social media or peer-to-peer payment requests.

Online shopping scams: Scammers mimic legitimate Labor Day sales with fake websites designed to steal your money and data. Double-check URLs, avoid clicking on unsolicited ads, and use credit cards for added protection.

Charity scams: While many nonprofits run genuine fundraising campaigns, scammers create fake charities to exploit goodwill. Research organizations at BBB Wise Giving Alliance — Give.org before donating.

Home improvement fraud: Labor Day often marks the final push for warm-weather repairs. Watch out for door-to-door contractors offering suspiciously low bids or pressuring you into quick payments.

Phishing emails and texts: Be cautious of messages promoting “exclusive Labor Day deals” or fake shipping updates. These often contain malicious links that can lead to identity theft or malware.
