Make new milestones every day

“Up to this point the Lord has helped me.”

— 1 Samuel 7:12 (NIV)

This morning, I paused and pondered the memories made yesterday at my granddaughter’s wedding. What a milestone for her.

Milestones are major events that mark our lives with memorable moments like births, birthdays, weddings, holidays and other personal occasions and miracles from above.

In biblical days, the Israelites honored special moments by setting up markers, using stones to remember where their achievements and victories occurred. For instance, the prophet Samuel set up a large stone to mark the place where God helped give his people a victory over their enemies. I wonder if they used the term “milestone” back then as well.

I believe this shows God wants us to capture these special moments. I think in these modern times, some of the ways we mark milestones is by taking photographs. I have already received several photos from my granddaughter’s wedding.

Another way we create milestones is when we receive an award of some type or a certificate of honor. Walk into many offices, and you can see certificates and diplomas framed and hung on the walls as a reminder of their recipients’ achievements.

When my sons were in Little League Baseball, they received trophies at the end of the season. We proudly displayed them on the shelf in their rooms.

Each day we are marking new milestones in our lives. We need to recall the ones that mark our spiritual growth as well, such as increasing our prayer life, changing our perspectives and the insightful lessons we’ve learned with God’s help.

As we move forward in life, we can be encouraged by embracing those milestones and memories God has given us in the past. We can be assured he will continue to be faithful to keep them coming.
