Buffalo Grove police’s Officer named commander

Buffalo Grove’s newest police commander was born to be an officer in more ways than one.

Jonathan Officer was introduced in his new role to the village board Monday by police Chief Brian Budds. He was officially sworn in July 31. The position opened up when Tara Anderson was promoted to deputy chief.

Budds said Officer was chosen after multiple candidates were interviewed.

“I’m confident that Commander Officer will continue to serve our community with integrity, professionalism and a strong commitment to public safety,” Budds said.

Officer joined the department in 2017 after working for the University of Illinois Chicago department, and most recently served as the Buffalo Grove police department’s DEA Task Force officer.

He has served in the special operations unit, investigations division and as a patrol and field training officer. He served on the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Mobile Field Force in the past. He is also a firearms instructor and member of the department's honor guard

During his tenure, Officer earned accolades, including Officer of the Year in 2018, Police Combat Cross Medal in 2021 and the Cook County Crime Stoppers Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement in 2024.

“The Buffalo Grove Police Department is one of the best agencies in the area, if not the whole country, but we couldn't accomplish our goals without the help of the community,” Officer told the board. “I'm looking forward to serving all of you and serving the rest of the members of the community.”
