Proposal would protect animals and people

Illinois has a unique opportunity to lead the way on a critical public safety and animal welfare issue. Wild animals are not domestic pets. They are unpredictable by nature and can present serious dangers to communities, first responders and the animals themselves.

For example, two years ago, an African serval escaped from a home in a Lake County neighborhood. Although no people were harmed in this case, the serval later died from injuries it sustained during its recapture.

This is exactly the kind of preventable tragedy that Sen. Adriane Johnson is working to address. She has introduced legislation to prohibit the private ownership of high-risk wild animals such as servals, caracals, kangaroos and wallabies.

These animals often end up in environments that are unsafe, inhumane and far from what their species require to thrive. Private individuals — no matter how well-intentioned — are rarely equipped to meet their complex needs.

If we want to see meaningful progress, we must support leaders who prioritize the safety of both animals and people. Elections are ongoing, and every campaign event, doorstep visit or candidate forum is a chance to raise your voice. Ask those running for office where they stand on wildlife protections and the private ownership of exotic animals.

And don’t forget to follow Humane World Action Fund’s endorsements to identify candidates committed to compassion and common-sense policy.
