Kane County Health Department offers free Behavioral Health Interpreter Training

The Kane County Health Department, in partnership with the National Latino Behavioral Health Association and All Our Kids Early Childhood Network, is hosting a no-cost specialized Behavioral Health Interpreter Training to strengthen communication and care for individuals whose first language is not English.

The training will be held at the Kane County Regional Office of Education, 28 N. First St., Geneva, IL 60134, and will be offered for two audiences:

For interpreters

• Dates: Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 2-3

• Time: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (14 hours total over two days)

• Focus: Immersive instruction in the principles and practices of interpreter communication in behavioral health settings. Participants must be fluent in at least one language other than English.

• Who should attend: Direct service staff, clinicians, administrative support staff, community members, contractors, consumers, case managers, and others who use their bilingual skills to interpret for agencies.

• CEUs provided

For providers

• Date: Thursday, Sept.. 4

• Time: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (7 hours total)

• Focus: How to effectively work with interpreters in behavioral health settings, exploring communication styles, cultural context, and strategies to improve care for clients whose first language is not English.

• Who should attend: Direct service staff, clinicians, administrative support staff, community members, contractors, consumers, case managers, and others who use interpreters in their agency.

• CEUs provided

“These trainings address a critical need in behavioral health — ensuring that language barriers never become barriers to care,” said Michael Isaacson, KCHD Executive Director. “By equipping both interpreters and providers with the skills they need, we are building stronger and more inclusive services in Kane County.”
