District 207 students earn medals at Local ACT-SO Competition

Last school year, Maine Township High School District 207 teamed up with the DuPage County chapter of the NAACP Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics program (ACT-SO) to attend a local competition.

Three District 207 students received the following medals based on the amount of points they received:

• Kaitlyn Ankum, Maine East (recently graduated) — Gold medal in painting

• Ashley Ankum, Maine East (10th grade) — Bronze medal in drawing

• Tochi Ezeocha, Maine West (11th grade) — Silver medal in drawing and bronze medal in painting

ACT-SO provides recognition to young people who could demonstrate academic, scientific, and artistic achievement, allowing them to gain recognition equal to that often achieved by entertainers and athletes.

As a gold medal recipient, Kaitlyn Ankum went on to attend the national ACT-SO competition held in Charlotte, North Carolina in July, where she competed with students from across the country.

“We are incredibly proud of our students from Maine East and West for participating in the NAACP ACT-SO program,” said District 207’s ACT-SO Program Sponsor Ti Woods. “ACT-SO empowers young people to explore and showcase their talents in STEM, humanities, business, performing and visual arts, and more. Through ACT-SO, our students gain confidence, mentorship and a deeper connection to their passions and community.”
