Ukraine attacks Russian refinery with Trump, Putin set to meet

Ukraine attacked another Russian refinery just as Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are poised to meet in Alaska on Friday to discuss a potential ceasefire.

The strike on the Syzran refinery, located in Samara region about 850 kilometers (530 miles) from Ukraine’s border with Russia, is at least the fifth in the past week on key Russian energy infrastructure.

“A fire and explosions were recorded” after the attack, the General Staff in Kyiv said in a Facebook post. The facility produces a wide range of fuels, including aviation kerosene. It also supplies Russia’s armed forces, according to the statement.

It wasn’t possible to independently verify Ukraine’s claims. Rosneft PJSC, the owner of the refinery, didn’t immediately respond to a Bloomberg request for a comment.

Samara’s Regional Gov. Vyacheslav Fedorischev said in social media posts that there was “a massive attack” on the region early in the morning. Fires were contained and the results of UAV strikes were eliminated “in the shortest possible time” at one of the industrial facilities of the region.

The Syzran refinery, with a design capacity of 8.5 million barrels per year, or about 170,000 barrels per day, has been attacked several times by Ukraine. The last strike in February forced the facility to halt refinery runs for about a week.
