Seeking an answer about Trump’s motives

I do not understand the rationale behind Trump's imposing tariffs on products from friendly foreign countries. Is there a wealthy partner awaiting the tax and/or duty from these tariffs?

When he chastises former leaders who in his words did nothing to help the United States of America, I question that. They all cooperated in their own way for this country, some more so than others.

He boasts about his expertise and fairness and bellows about his accomplishments. Few of his fellow constituents have similar viewpoints and have a wary eye of his work. Some of his business partners frown upon his building methods as being questionable, yet few will speak out.

Is it his self-gratification, his wealthy business associates’ quest for a quick fortune or some other cause?
