Chamber Park ribbon cutting marks new chapter for beloved community space

The Wheeling Park District celebrated the grand reopening of Chamber Park playground on Wednesday, July 23, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held during the Unplug at Chamber Park event. Unveiling a new playground, the celebration brought together families, community members and local officials to recognize the transformation of one of Wheeling’s most beloved community spaces.

“Chamber Park is a very special and historic place in Wheeling. There are three buildings in the park that are over 100 years old. One is the home of the Wheeling Historical Museum. Another, the church, transforms every December into Lollipop Lane, where children have come for generations to tell Santa and Mrs. Claus their Christmas wishes,” said Mike Burns, Vice President of the Board of Commissioners. “Now, through the efforts of our staff, who planned, prepared, and built these play structures, Chamber Park has a new playground.”

The newly redesigned playground features two distinct play areas, one with smaller slides and climbing structures for younger children and a larger structure with larger play pieces designed for older children, ensuring age-appropriate play pieces based on skill level and abilities. A modern swing set also includes adaptive options to support inclusive play. Additionally, an accessible merry-go-round is included to accommodate guests who use mobility devices and encourage group interaction. The new safety surfacing also provides a soft, impact-absorbing foundation, while shaded areas and seating nearby create a comfortable space for families to relax and supervise.

These playground updates not only enhance accessibility and safety but also reflect thoughtful design that encourages creativity, physical activity, and community connection.

Chamber Park is at 131 N. Wolf Road, Wheeling.
