Back-to-school: Blessing kids' backpacks, adults' work bags at Aurora church
Celebrating back-to-school season, Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora will hold a blessing of the backpacks on Sunday, Aug. 17.
The Rev. Tammy Scott, lead pastor, will bless students' backpacks and adults' work bags during 10:30 a.m. worship at the church, 14 N. May St. in Aurora. A fellowship hour will follow worship.
“Whether your child is starting kindergarten, heading off to middle school or preparing for a new year of learning, this blessing surrounds them with love, support and prayer,” Rev. Scott said. “It's also a sacred reminder that God goes with us — into classrooms, cafeterias, carpools and all the places where learning and growing happens.
“This special gathering provides an opportunity for students, teachers and families to come together as we prepare for the upcoming school year. Whether you're a student carrying a new backpack or a community member looking to spread good wishes, your presence will make a difference.”
The pastor added that the church continues to collect backpacks for homeless community members. Last winter, Wesley contracted as an emergency warming center for the city of Aurora from January to March, serving 174 unhoused guests with help from 50 volunteers and community organizations. Guests received a cot, meals, snacks and water.
