Gurnee police warn of scammers impersonating officers

Gurnee police are warning of a phone scam involving people impersonating village police officers and threatening residents with arrest unless they pay fake fines.

Police say they never call residents to demand money or payment, and will never threaten arrest over the phone or ask for gift cards, wire transfers or personal financial information.

Scammers can “spoof” numbers to make it look like the call is coming from the police department, so residents cannot trust Caller ID alone. They should hang up immediately if a call sounds suspicious and contact the police department at (847) 599-7000.
