Geneva woman running for Republican nomination for state Senate
A Geneva woman has announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for the 33rd state Senate seat.
State Sen. Don DeWitte of St. Charles recently announced he is not seeking reelection in 2026.
The 33rd District serves residents of all or parts of Crystal Lake, Algonquin, Carpentersville, West Dundee, Plato Center, South Elgin, Campton Hills, St. Charles, Geneva and Elburn.
Jessica Breugelmans said in a press release that she is a philanthropist, former teacher and businesswoman.
“I’m running because Illinois families are getting crushed,” Breugelmans said. “While they stretch every dollar to afford groceries, electric bills, and school supplies, politicians in Springfield keep demanding more — more taxes, more spending, and bigger government. And they expect working families to foot the bill. I’m running to put a stop to it.”
Breugelmans ran for the Geneva school board in 2019 but lost.
“I’ve been on the front lines as a teacher, as a parent, and as a watchdog,” she said. “I’ve seen how top-down decisions and red tape have pushed parents out and left families in the dark. I will demand accountability, restore transparency, and make sure parents have a real voice in their children’s education.”
She also said she supports restricting girls’ sports team eligibility to biological females.
“Sports taught me to be confident, resilient, and determined,” Breugelmans said. “Girls deserve to compete on a level playing field. That is why I support keeping girls’ sports for biological females. This is not political. It is about protecting opportunity.”
Candidates for established political parties can begin circulating nomination petitions on Tuesday.
Early voting begins Feb. 5 for the March 17 partisan primary election. The general election is Nov. 3, 2026.
