Cubs tough decisions begin, as Flexen is released

MILWAUKEE — With the trade deadline about to arrive, the Cubs might have some difficult roster decisions to make.

They got that process started Tuesday by designating relief pitcher Chris Flexen for assignment, while calling up right-hander Gavin Hollowell.

Flexen was an important part of the Cubs' success this season. He was called up on April 30 and didn't allow an earned run in his first 12 appearances.

His season ERA is still just 3.09, but Flexen allowed 12 runs and 5 homers in his last four appearances. Hollowell did well in 5 appearances with the Cubs earlier this season, posting a 1.42 ERA. He was less successful in Iowa after being sent down.

“It wasn't a fun conversation,” manager Craig Counsell said before the game. “It never is, but I think Chris has been a contributor on this team. He's contributed in some big ways to this team. Sometimes, it doesn't feel fair.

“We made a decision, we've got to move forward with it. But I think when somebody's made that level of contribution, it's certainly difficult.”

Flexen could conceivably return to the Cubs down the road if he clears waivers.

Boyd falters

After Monday's loss, all the talk in the clubhouse was about the death of Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg. Before Tuesday's game, Craig Counsell shared thoughts on Matthew Boyd's worst outing of the season Monday. Boyd's 25-inning scoreless streak ended with a 4-run third by the Brewers.

“It makes you realize how good you really have to be to have success,” Counsell said. “His fastball command was just not up to his (standards). He had a number of fastballs that were in, that he just put too far in. He had hitters out, and he just gave them another pitch. He's been on the corners constantly, and that's why he's been so successful.”

The Cubs made Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski throw 40 pitches in a long top of the first inning. Could the delay have thrown Boyd off his game?

“You've got to prepare for that stuff,” Counsell said. “You want a 3-run lead or you do you want a short top of the first?”

Taillon progresses

Everything went well with Jameson Taillon's live batting practice on Tuesday and he'll start for Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, according to manager Craig Counsell. Taillon has been out since June 29 with a calf strain. … Javier Assad is scheduled to start for Iowa on Wednesday.
