Barrington Rotary supports Smart Farm to feed the hungry

The Barrington Rotary presented $1,000 to Smart Farm on July 11 in recognition of the fresh produce they donate to area food pantries and underserved food deserts, and their community outreach of teaching sustainable gardening practices.

Grace Todd, director, Integrative Medicine and Health Management, and Oncology Services, told the Rotarians assembled that “Fresh produce plays a vital role in supporting food pantries by supplying essential nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber — that are often missing from the diets of individuals and families facing food insecurity. Access to fresh fruits and vegetables not only promotes better overall health, but also helps reduce the risk of diet-related chronic illnesses.”

The Barrington Rotary supports community projects and contributes to life enrichment programs for people of all ages.

Smart Farm of Barrington is a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization that is part of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital. Their mission is to provide high-quality produce to local communities and those in need who are at risk of food insecurities, while being an educational resource on sustainable gardening practices, healthy eating and strategies to Live Fully.
