New wedge barriers in downtown Elgin to limit vehicle traffic on Riverside Drive on weekends

New wedge barriers installed in downtown Elgin will be deployed for the first time this weekend on Riverside Drive.

The safety barriers will be raised at each end of Riverside Drive every Friday at 3 p.m. and lowered at 6 a.m. Monday. Beginning this week through Oct. 12, the barriers will transform the street into a pedestrian-only promenade for the Downtown Elgin Market, concerts, and other weekend events.

Barriers on South Grove Avenue between Prairie and Lake streets, next to Festival Park, have been installed but will only be raised during large events.
