Police: Chicago man concealed handgun near Palatine apartments

A Chicago man is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday after Palatine police took him into custody on outstanding warrants and weapons charges.

Police said officers on patrol in the 700 block of East Rand Grove Lane shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday spotted a man later identified as Kenneth J. Smith concealing a black object behind an electrical box near an apartment building.

Officers arrested Smith, 29, of the 5100 block of West Huron Street, after confirming he had active arrest warrants from DuPage County and the Illinois Department of Corrections, police said.

Authorities said officers also found a black jacket containing a 9mm handgun with a loaded extended magazine. Smith does not have a valid FOID card, police said.

He faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and unlawful aggravated possession of a weapon without a FOID card.
